Movie fans share the most overrated movies of the 2020s so far: 'Critics have been clutching at straws for decent production'

The 2020s haven't exactly been the golden age of cinema. And according to the discorse below, that doesn't seem to be a hot take. We've had a few standouts: Everything Everywhere All at Once turned the multiverse into an emotional gut punch, and Greta Gerwig somehow turned Barbie into both a cultural reset and an existential crisis. If America Ferrera's monologue didn't make you tear up, are you okay? But for every fresh hit, there's a lukewarm studio sequel or a 2.5-hour CGI snoozefest that critics insist is visionary (looking at you, Don't Worry Darling.)

  • The bar feels… low. Remember the 2000s? We had Christopher Nolan redefining sci-fi thrillers with Inception, the Coen Brothers dropping No Country for Old Men, and Guillermo del Toro giving us Pan’s Labyrinth. Even the 2010s gave us Denis Villeneuve's Arrival and Bong Joon-ho's genre-mashing Parasite.

    Now, it feels like Hollywood is afraid to take real risks unless an algorithm says it’ll trend on TikTok. We need the return of auteurs—your Finchers, your PTAs, even a Tarantino wildcard. Movie lovers are starving, and we deserve more than just flashy trailers and mid-tier lore.

    Also, 2022 was just a weak movie year. Banshee's was good but left everyone a bit confused, like watching a married couple bicker in public without knowing what's really bothering them. Tar was great but absolutely no one watched it. Elvis was legit bad. Fablemans was boring. Avatar 2 was weird. Top G_n was there for the vibes. Triangle of Sadness is unwatchable in sections.

    Before I get piled on. All Quiet was a bad movie. It's preachy and dumb, it talks down to its audience. Not to mention it's bad history and chooses to throw out the book. It's the 300 version of WW1. If your into that, great, but it's sucked IMO and I couldn't believe it got nominated.

    So EEAAO won some awards, who cares. It's a good movie that had a lot of creative elements and committed performances. It's not my favorite film, I'll might not watch it again. But "most overrated" come on.

    gilestowler I only watched it on a flight because I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to concentrate much on it otherwise. It made a good flight film. It would have made a fine tv movie. It was the dictionary definition of adequate. Posh kids banging bills about, one of them being a bit less posh and Zendaya in her undercrackers. Solid 6/10

    or the strategic goals of any faction. Plus there were many scenes that displayed a really immature understanding of warfare and trauma. Civil war has to be one of my least favorite films of all time, and has become a litmus test for my opinion of others when it comes to movie appreciation.

    chiclets5 I guess one movie I thought was overrated was the remake of West side story. I understand why people did want it to be redone and I think the acting was very good, I just grew up with the original and it was hard to see that be changed.
